The Department of Pediatrics, Government Medical College, Kozhikode was established in the year 1965 and moved to the Institute of Maternal and Child Health in the year 1975. The department is one of the largest facilities devoted to the care of sick children in this part of the world and in fact, the Institute conducts about sixteen to eighteen thousand deliveries annually. Sick children are referred from the six Northern districts of Kerala and from the neighbouring states as well. Research is high on the agenda & there is also an abundance of clinical material. The spadework for laying a firm foundation was carried out by stalwarts including Dr. NM Mathai, Dr. KC Rajagopalan and Dr. MK Sainaba. Our eminent faculty members are involved in various social and organizational activities for provision of optimal curative, promotive and palliative child health care.
Institute of Maternal & Child Health functioning in the Kozhikode Medical College campus holds the record of conducting the most number of deliveries per day in Asia. Established in 1975 with 610 beds it was later renovated and supplemented with a new block. The IMCH new Golden Jubilee block was built with the aid of NRHM & was inaugurated by the Hon’ble Minister for Home Affairs for state, Sri. Mullapppally Ramachandran in 2011. The Institute of Maternal and Child Health is concerned with teaching, training, service delivery and research in the delivery of health care to Mothers, Children and Adolescents within the framework of general and reproductive health services. Clear emphasis is given on teaching & training for the delivery of health services through integration of preventive, promotive, clinical and managerial skills. The department serves the obstetric and paediatric wards and Adolescent health clinic of the Medical College and the Urban and the rural health centres of Kozhikode. A practical / field-based hands-on-training in reproductive and child health, adolescent health and family welfare is implemented here. The research activities of the department primarily focuses on reproductive health, safe motherhood, child growth and development & health problems, adolescent health and various aspects of family welfare.
The Indian Academy of Pediatrics functions in close liaison with the department, which offers a leadership role in the region. The work of the department extends to the surrounding districts and has been acclaimed in the spheres of improvement of immunization coverage and infant mortality, adolescent health, mental health and tribal health.
The Department of Paediatrics offers inpatient and outpatient care as well as critical care of newborns & children which goes hand in hand with teaching Pediatrics to undergraduate and postgraduate students. There is an annual intake of twenty postgraduate students, of which eight are degree and twelve are diploma seats.
The spacious library at our department is well equipped with books and periodicals and facilities for e - learning. The annual CME program for final year residents being held for the last fifteen years draws delegates from all over the country and is often not able to cater to all who wish to attend.
Specialty clinics in various disciplines are a unique feature of the department and two or three clinics run concurrently on all week days. State of the art health care is provided to the sickest children from the most disadvantaged families in an atmosphere of trust and cooperation, bringing succour to those who need it most.
Govt. Medical College, Kozhikode, also known as the Calicut medical College is one of the prestigious educational institutions located in the city of Kozhikode in Kerala. Incepted in 1957 as the second medical college in Kerala, the institution has evolved into a premier centre of medical education in the State. Located about 8 km east from the heart of the city, the sprawling Medical College campus is spread over an extensive area of 270 acres (1.1 km²). The college was formerly affiliated to the University of Calicut and today is affiliated to the Kerala University for Health Sciences (KUHS). This college and allied institutions serve 40% of the population of Kerala.
On 29th May 1957 the foundation stone of the college was laid by the then Governor of Kerala, Dr. B. Ramakrishna Rao. Dr. A. R. Menon, the then minister of Health, Kerala state, whose initiative and passion were responsible for the founding of the College formally inaugurated it on 5th August 1957. Dr. K. N. Pisharoty, the first principal, was given the responsibility of the task of organizing the college. From then on there was no looking back…
Since inception Medical College, Calicut has grown in leaps & bounds. In 1966, the main hospital was commissioned with 1183 beds supplemented later on by the Institute of Maternal and Child Health in 1975 (610 beds), the Savithri Devi Saboo Memorial Cancer Institute (101 beds) and the Chest Hospital (100 beds). A super specialty complex, a new Block for the Institute of Maternal and Child Health, an artificial limb centre, the College of Nursing , the College of Pharmacy, Casualty (Emergency Services) complex, Samrakshana Kendram, and Vishrama Kendram were later added to the main institution. The present bed strength is 3025 which makes it the largest bedded hospital in the country. However the patient load is beyond the commissioned number of total beds & even the floors and corridors are usually occupied. The Dental College was established in 1984 & the Nursing College was started in 1989. Both are at present functioning as independent colleges.
Calicut or Kozhikode, the third largest city in Kerala is a coastal city located in the Malabar region of Kerala. Known as the City of Zamorins it was an important trading centre on the Malabar Coast. Kozhikode was also known as the City of Spices for its role as a major trading point in eastern spices. Lured by the spice trade, Phoenicians, Arabs and Chinese have landed on its shores. Calicut and is quite close to Kappad Beach, where Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama landed in 1498 and changed history.
The institution has grown steadily from humble beginnings over the years. The annual intake of undergraduate students has increased from 50 to 250. The consolidation of undergraduate medical education was achieved in the 1960s & the 1970s witnessed the expansion into postgraduate medical education in various branches. Widening its academic horizon, today, the college provides PG in 28 disciplines and provides Training programmes in the super specialties. Now the college has super-specialty courses in 10 departments. The college also conducts degree and PG courses in Nursing and Pharmacy as well as degree and diploma courses in Paramedical sciences.
Over the last decade most of the modern specialty services in medical care have been developed in the institution including kidney transplantation. The hospital has a well-equipped Cardiac Catheterization Lab and Tele Cobalt Therapy unit. A full-fledged MCI recognized Centre for Medical Education technology is functioning and it caters to 12 medical colleges. Computer facilities have been provided in the Medical library & almost all of the departments and offices of the college and hospitals. Networking is now being implemented among the hospitals, departments and offices of the Medical College.
The centre for excellence now boasts of a Multi-storied Super Specialty Complex (SSB), new block for Institute of Maternal and Child Health and the Institute of Sports Medicine. The super specialty complex for MCH was started with outpatient clinics of the super specialties exclusively. Later the inpatient wards also started functioning. It has the state of the art Cardiac Cath Lab, MRI Scan, Doppler ultra sound and Digital Radiography system. Efforts are on to establish super-specialty surgical block along with emergency and critical care facility under PMSSY Phase -3 with a project outlay of 150 crores.
The Institute of Mental Health & Neurosciences under the central scheme functions in the campus. Now a Tertiary Cancer Care Centre has been allotted to this college. Three new departments - Department of Neonatology, Department of Emergency and Critical Care Medicine and Department of Family Medicine have started functioning here. The college is in the correct path of development to fulfill its vision and mission with Multi-disciplinary research units & theatre complexes coming up.
